TVU 21. Awelye, Body Paint, Emily Kngwarreye, 1996, 60" x 36"

The brush strokes are based on ceremonial body paint designs to create a hauntingly powerful painting with a strikingly modern sensibilty. Emily painted these works on the ground working her way around the canvas dealing with a quadrant at a time, hence the distinctive rhythms of the brush strokes, which tend to trail off in the middle of the canvas due to the limits of Emily's reach.
