Emilys middle period colorist paintings are often described in terms of women's ceremonial responsibility for the renewal of nature, particularly plant life, women being the gatherers in this hunter-gatherer society. When Emily was asked toe explain her paintings with specificity she famously replied, "Whole lot! Everything! Implying that Aboriginal women are responsible for growth and renewal and that these natural processes of growth and renewal are interlinked plants and animals, people, everything. Paintings of this period often convey the feeling of natural cycles in full swing , plants bursting forth bearing flowers and fruits.
