7. Fire Dreaming, Dr. George Tjapaltjarri, 1987, 72 x 36 inches, 192
x 92 cms
The
painting above is a classic 1980's style Tingari Cycle painting giving
ample evidence that long before Dr. George developed his new style
paintings in the late 90's, which can be seen earlier in the Papunya
area of this site, that he was already a painter of formidable talents.
The network of yellow ochre lines and circles depict the travels of
Tingari Ancestors and the places they camped, and the red, pink and
gray infill represents the majestic eroded landscape of the Western
Desert through which they traveled. The grid of traveling lines and
circles is like a net being pulled taught over the landscape implying
that ancestral actions, specifically the travels of the Tingari mob
and the great bush fire they set, brought the contemporary landscape,
that Aboriginal people know intimately, into being.
