2. (DBL 7) Milky Way Dreaming Paddy Japaljarri Gibson, 1995, 53" x 49"

Paddy Gibson is one of the senior men at Lajamanu who over the years has frequently painted in the company of other elders such as Billy Hogan and Abie Jangala. This painting in a very reductive form depicts the Warlpiri story of how the stars of the Milky Way became men, who in turn became responsible for initiating young men. Depicted here is a Witi pole (central red line) and the snake vine (squiggley red lines flanking the central line) that are still used in initiation ceremonies today. The snake vine is used to tie the Witi poles to the legs of the elder men who dance around the young initiates.
