TDB 4. Hunting Story, Elizabeth Gordon, 1995, 35" x 24" For Sale

This painting has a highly evocative quality of light often seen in Balgo paintings, shapes are outlined by lighter colors in such a way that they are highlighted, and here they simply glow. Elizabeth has depicted two Naparulla women and two Tjapangati men, hunting in the country in which she grew up before moving to the Balgo Hills Mission Station.

The women are the U shapes at the top, and the men the U shapes in the lower quadrants. They are hunting for snakes, kangaroo, emu, goanna, cats, and rabbits. At the center of the painting is a waterhole situated at a place where creeks join and then branch off again like a crossroads. Through her use of color to imply light she has effectively foregrounded the central elements of the story the two men and two women and the crossing creeks and central waterhole.
