| The "Japaljarri mob" was often
joined by Jack Jakamarra Ross, either working on his own paintings
or just stopping in for some conversation. Jack is a true bush man
of the old school. He was featured in the pilot for the Australian
television series Bush Mechanics, telling a story about his first
encounter with a motorcar. Jack still makes great boomerangs and
spears. Here he's admiring a number seven boomerang, or wirlki,
he has just brought into the art center. In a moment he's about
to start singing it with great exuberance "...Wirlki ma
Wirlki... Wirlki ma Wirlki!" When he's is in high spirits
no one has a more natural sense of drama than Jack Ross—a wonderful
old man. One can only imagine what he contributes to a ceremonial
performance. |
