Paddy Sims is a wise old man who's spent a lot of time thinking about the issues facing his culture. Paddy knew that he only way he could ensure that I truly "got it" was if I saw it with my own eyes. If I got it and captured it in images, then the film's audience would hopefully get it too. Paddy understands the power of images and other modern media for sending a mesage to the outside world in a form it understands. He also wanted to record his songs and images of the country related to them for posterity so that young people in the community could know after he was gone. This was a daring undertaking for both of us, but we both saw its many possibilities. Paddy proposed a series of bush trips out to his traditional country, which were meant to educate us about the connections between the Dreamings he paints, the songs he sings, and the country he grew up in. Looking out the window of a fast moving Landcruiser Aboriginal people see so much more than we do in the vistas rolling by, it was Paddy's mission to bring the country to life for us. Paddy did his best to get me to see the land as he sees it, not as a barren empty place but a land full of memories, full of natural vitality, and spiritual vitality which comes from the first events of the Dreamtime which formed his country and which resonate there still. |
